Many names of paints that no longer exist are still used. The CI is the only way to find out the actual pigment<\/li>\n<li>Most paints are <em>single-pigment<\/em> paints. That is they only contain one pigment \u2013 they will only have one CI.<\/li>\n<li>Some paints are mixes, often termed <em>Convenience Mixtures<\/em>. These will contain two or more CIs<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Hues\u2019, \u2018New\u2019, \u2018Permanent\u2019. If you see a term like this in the paint&#8217;s name, beware that its not the real McCoy. The manufacturers are constantly coming up with new modifying words to avoid having to admit the paint does not actually contain that pigment, and often they don\u2019t add these modifiers unless they are called out by the ASTM. An example of this is &#8216;Cadmium Red Hue&#8217;.\u00a0 Cadmiums are expensive pigments, so many manufacturers will substitute other, less expensive, pigments.\u00a0 They are not supposed to call it &#8216;cadmium&#8217;, so they get by this restriction by calling &#8216; Cadmium Hue&#8217;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.7&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.7&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.7&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Pick up one of your tubes of paint and look at the label. Somewhere, you should see the CI.\u00a0 It can be identified as a short code starting with the letter \u2018P\u2019<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The \u2018P\u2019 stands for \u2018pigment\u2019. Occasionally you might run across an \u2018N\u2019 instead.\u00a0 This means a \u2018natural\u2019 and most often means it is made from something organic and has very poor light fastness.<\/li>\n<li>Right after the \u2018P\u2019 you will see a color initial (<strong>Y<\/strong>ellow, <strong>O<\/strong>range, <strong>R<\/strong>ed, <strong>B<\/strong>lue, <strong>V<\/strong>iolet, <strong>G<\/strong>reen, <strong>Br<\/strong>own, <strong>B<\/strong>lac<strong>k<\/strong>, or <strong>W<\/strong>hite),<\/li>\n<li>this will be followed by a number assigned by the SDC. (1-3 digits)<\/li>\n<li>Example: PG 7 \u2013 commonly referred to as Phthalo Green, Blue Shade.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;3_5,2_5&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.7&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;3_5&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.7&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.7&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>The photo to the right is the information on a tube of Daniel Smith &#8216;Deep Scarlet.\u00a0 You can see the pigment indicator is PR 175. This is Red Pigment #175 &#8211; Benzimidazolone. Obviously, &#8216;Deep Scarlet&#8217; is a better choice for a name that reflects the color.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;2_5&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.7&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_image src=&#8221;http:\/\/www.teaksouls.com\/johnsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/ASTM-Details-on-tube-rotated-e1651794679370.jpg&#8221; title_text=&#8221;ASTM Details on tube&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.7&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;1_2,1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.7&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.7&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.7&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>How do you find out more information about a particular pigment?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Paint manufacturers\u2019 sites.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Online Stores: my favorite for information is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.DickBlick.com,\">www.DickBlick.com.<\/a> If you are shopping for a paint online, look for a link to &#8216;more information&#8217;, or &#8216;pigment information&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.handprint.com\/HP\/WCL\/water.html\">Handprint<\/a>. The watercolorist\u2019s Bible. Bruce McEvoy wrote this site.\u00a0 He is a professional engineer and amateur watercolorist.\u00a0 The site is packed full of information about the physics of color, and the characteristics of watercolor paints.\u00a0 Unfortunately for us, Bruce has moved on to other endeavors, but his site lives on.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/artiscreation.com\">Art Is Creation<\/a>. This site stays current with <em>all<\/em> of the pigments (old, current, and new), but doesn\u2019t have as much useful information for the watercolorist as Handprint<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wetcanvas.com\/\">Wet Canvas<\/a> \u2013 it\u2019s a big blog for Watercolorists. Often when you do an online search for something about watercolor, it will come up.<\/li>\n<li>A quick way to find out information about a particular pigment is to do a simple online search.\u00a0 Suppose we want more information about the PR 175 on the tube in the picture above. Type the following into your search engine:\u00a0 <strong>PR174 pigment<\/strong>. Despite the creative names, they all will be the same paint.<\/p>\n<p>The next two are both &#8216;Sap Green&#8217;, but have different recipes.\u00a0 One uses PG36 and the other uses PG7.\u00a0 One mixes with a yellow (PY150), and the other with an orange (PO49).<\/p>\n<p>Note that the second &#8216;Sap Green&#8217;, has an identical formula to\u00a0 &#8216;Hooker&#8217;s Green&#8217;.\u00a0 Based on the color swatch, there is more of the orange in the Sap.
